The 1924 C.K. Chatterton painting, “Street in Kennebunkport,” described in last week’s story, “Street in Kennebunkport for sale,” failed to sell Oct. 18 at the DuMouchelle Auction House in Detroit. Although estimated to fetch as much as $15,000, the auctioneer passed on the painting when no one was willing to submit the $7,500 opening bid. Meanwhile, while several locals suggested the buildings seen in the painting may be those at the corner of Spring and Temple streets, one reader, who asked to remain anonymous, submitted this photo, suggesting the depicted homes may actually be across Spring Street, at the intersection with Maine Street.
