Sierra Club to screen documentary

“American Meat,” a pro-farmer documentary film on chicken, hog and cattle production in the U.S., will be shown by the Maine Sierra Club at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25 at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunk. Dessert will be served at 6:30 p.m.

While the film is open to the public at no charge, attendees are asked to bring one item of nonperishable food for the York County Shelter Programs’ food pantry.

Following the film, Jonah Fertig of the Local Sprouts Café, Portland’s first community-supported café, and the folks from Neverdun Farm in Arundel will lead a discussion on the local foods movement and its implications for Maine agriculture and for combating climate change.

“American Meat” is a solutions-oriented documentary chronicling the current state of the U.S. meat industry. Featuring farmers across America, it takes an evenhanded look at animal husbandry. First explaining how Americans arrived at our current industrial system, the story shifts to the present day. The feedlots and confinement houses of the industrial systems are not shown with hidden cameras but rather through the eyes of the farmers who live and work there.

From there the documentary, directed by Graham Meriwether, shifts to the revolution taking root in animal husbandry, led by the charismatic and passionate Joel Salatin. American farmers, who have changed their lives to start grass-based farms, share the everyday solutions people can make to support the country’s agriculture.
