In a short time period, Atria staff took the the third-floor lounge area and renovated it into a theater for residents.

“Atria Senior Living’s building has been standing for a little over 20 years now, and once a month the residents get together for a Resident Council Meeting,” said Engage Life Director Stephanie Miles. “And one of the common requests was for a movie theater. Once corporate heard of the common request, they put together a plan and got to it.”

Since the red-ribbon opening on Jan. 11, residents have had the option of four evening shows each week.

“We have our Monday night Resident Choice Film, Wednesday night Netflix Entertainment, Friday night Sumner’s Concert Selection, and our Saturday night is a rotating selected genre (classical, romance, thriller and comedy,” Miles said.

The theater features “big, comfortable seats, fresh popcorn and one big screen to watch all the classics,” Miles said.

Among the movies screened to date are “Rebecca,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “The Dirty Dozen, “October Sky” and “Il Volo Takes Flight.”

“It’s been a great joy getting to watch our favorite films on such a large and clear, crisp screen,” said resident Thomas Bell. “I feel as though I am physically there.”
