Clara Whetstone

Clara Virginia Phelps Whetstone, 97, died early Saturday morning, July 28 at Huntington/Bradford Common in Kennebunk where she had resided since 2009.

Born June 18, 1921 in Harnett County, North Carolina, Mrs. Whet- stone was the daughter of Stella Henderson Phelps and Leonard Eugene Phelps of Olivia, North Carolina.

She married George W. Whetstone on June 11, 1943. His decades-long career with the United States Geological Survey took the couple to postings throughout the U.S. and Alaska. The couple retired to Sanford, North Carolina, in 1979. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 2008.

A lifelong reader, particularly of mysteries, Mrs. Whetstone was also an avid European traveler, who especially loved Scotland and Paris.

She is survived by two daughters, Ann E. Whetstone (daughter-in-law, Paula Keeney) of Kennebunk, and Barbara W. Carroll (son-in-law, John Carroll) of Alexandria, Virginia.

She leaves behind two grandsons and their families: Brad and Dana Carroll and sons, Andrew, James, Will, and Charlie of Chatham, New Jersey, and Jeff and Marylee Carroll and sons, Jack and Brooks, also of Chatham. A brother, Julian Phelps (wife, Barbara), of Phoenix, also survives.

She will be buried next to her husband in the cemetery at the Olivia Presbyterian Church, Olivia, North Carolina.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff of Huntington Common/Bradford Common, for the many years of love and care she experienced there, and more recently, Beacon Hospice.
