Small steps add up to big change

To the editor,

Giant steps can be made up of many small steps. The Planeteers of Southern Maine are happy to report the following: At our April 21 Earth Day Celebration in Kennebunk this year, we played up 2018’s international theme, Say No to Plastics, by handing out ocean-blue aluminum water bottles to everyone pledging to no longer use single-use plastic water bottles (bottles courtesy of Casella Waste Industries).

At the same time, we wrote a note to the Kennebunk selectmen, asking them to also Say No to Plastics by banning single-use plastic water bottles in municipal properties and at municipal events. Now even two months later, we received notification from Dick Morin, board chairman, that together with Town Manager Michael Pardue, it was agreed that the town of Kennebunk would do away with single-use plastic water bottles at town hall.

Next time at town hall, visit the new bubblers with bottle filling stations they’ve installed on both second and third floors and be sure to thank the powers that be. Every step forward is worth celebrating.
