The Kennebunk High School theater department, in collaboration with The Public Theater in New York, and Kennebunk’s own MaineStage Shakespeare, announced that this season’s high school musical will be “As You Like It.”

Fresh off its world premiere in September, presented by The Public at the Delacorte Theater in New York, William Shakespeare’s classic comedy, created by Shaina Taub and Laurie Woolery, is coming to Kennebunk High for its first production outside of New York City.

The creators of the show, along with actors, designers and musicians, will mentor, rehearse and perform with Kennebunk High School students and community members.

MaineStage Shakespeare’s Artistic Director, Chiara Klein, said of the production, “This unprecedented community collaboration is the natural manifestation of the moment we find ourselves in. The arts in the Kennebunks are experiencing a resurgence, galvanized by this beautiful new theater. This led us to think … wouldn’t it be amazing to represent the coming together of the school, professionals, and community though a piece of art? And shouldn’t that piece of art be a celebration of not just the community, but of the community we wish to be? That is what “As You Like It” will strive to do.”

The newly completed high school theater opened its doors to audience members for the first time a couple months ago with a red-carpet gala and sold out opening.

“As You Like It” opens at Kennebunk High School on Thursday, March 1. Additional performance dates are March 2, 3, 9, 10 and 11. Tickets for all performances are available online. Advance ticket purchase is recommended.
