Peter Bennett

Peter Michael Bennett, or “Benny” as many knew him, age 59 passed away unexpectedly on Monday Nov. 6, 2017, in Saint Augustine, Florida.

Peter was born and raised in Portland, later moving to Kennebunk where he attended Kennebunk High School.

He excelled in both academics and sports. Peter was a terrific athlete and was highly acclaimed in swimming, tennis, wrestling and football.

Following high school, Peter attended the University of Maine in Orono and later the Landing Boat School in Arundel.

Peter was known around town for being the biggest small businessman.

In 1981, Peter and his brother Jona founded Bennetts’ Sea and Country Store.

This popular landmark was enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. His next venture was to dive into the seafood industry, exporting delicacies to the Japanese.

He became the largest sea urchin broker in the Northeast. In later years he and his wife, Amy, opened Nathan Anthonys’ Old World Deli in Arundel along with their three children.

In 2008 Peter and his family moved to Saint Augustine. Known for being the oldest city in our nation, Peter was always ready to give his friend the nickel tour. He enjoyed exploring different parts of Florida and going to the beach with family and friends.

Every day was a new adventure for Peter and those who surrounded him

As recently as this past summer Peter and his sons were in Kennebunk pursuing yet another business venture, which allowed him to spend quality time with his two sons and nephew William.

Peter always had an amazing drive to succeed. Whether in sports as a child or later in life as a businessman. He was an incredibly outgoing, friendly and thoughtful person. Wherever he went he made deep and lasting friendships.

Benny was always famous for having a great joke or story. He was a wonderful dad who wanted nothing but the best for his children.

He has instilled many life lessons and traditions that will carry on for years to come. Deviled eggs at every celebration and “Always keep your left up” are just a few. Please remember Benny always lived by the adage: “Life is not a dress rehearsal, live each day to the fullest.”

He is predeceased by his father, Charles Joseph Bennett Jr. and his oldest brother, Charles Joseph Bennett III.

Peter is survived by his loving wife Amy and their three children, Nathan Anthony, Jack Carrigan and Caroline Rose Bennett.

In addition he is survived by his brother, Jonathan Paul Bennett, his wife Patricia and their children Brianna, Kellen, and Alainna; sister Mary Elizabeth and husband Howie; brother Michael Andrew Bennett, his wife Terri and their daughters Hannah and Emily; sister Sara Ellen Bennett and her two children Kacey and William; along with pre deceased brothers’ Charles Joseph Bennetts III’s Children Nicholas and Jillian.
