Grete Palermo

Grete Palermo passed away peacefully on Friday, June 2, 2017 in her home in Cape Porpoise.

She was born on April 11, 1928 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was the daughter of the late Rasmus Christian Andersen and Olga Jacobsen.

Grete grew up and went to school in Denmark and moved to Paris, where she lived for six and a half years. During that time, she traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa and Latin America. Grete met and married Stephen Palermo in Paris in April 1961. They moved together briefly to Philadelphia, then to Puerto Rico, before settling in New York City, where they lived until 2014, sharing their time between their apartment in the Lower East Side and their house in Cape Porpoise. In 2014, Grete and Steve moved permanently to Maine, enjoying their home in Cape Porpoise surrounded by their friends and Steve’s artwork.

Grete worked with Steve in New York as a pattern maker, supplying many fashion houses in the garment district.

Grete will be remembered best by those who loved her for her boundless generosity toward her family, friends and neighbors, her sharp sense of humor, deep caring for animals – particularly her dogs Molly and Hannah, and cat Max – her keen interest and concern for the environment and her love of fried oysters and pickled herrings.

Grete was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Steve, in December 2015.

A memorial service for Grete and Steve will be planned in Cape Porpoise in the fall.
