Donald Brooks

Donald W. “Donnie” Brooks, 82, of Kennebunkport, died peacefully on Christmas morning, Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016 at Kennebunk Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

He was born in Biddeford on Aug. 2, 1934, a son of Earl L. and Blanche (Wildes) Brooks.

He grew up on Turbat’s Creek and was destined for a life on the ocean. From the time he was old enough to walk, he was on the clam flats with his grandfather. He lobstered (on his boat “Rubber Duck”) out of Cape Porpoise and also shrimped and worked on fishing boats for years.

For some time, he worked as a carpenter for R.L. Philbrick & Son, and the Kennebunkport Highway Department, but always gravitated back toward the sea.

In his younger years, he immensely enjoyed hunting and fishing and was known for taking along any neighborhood kid that wanted to go.

Even in his retirement, he would spend countless hours at the Government Wharf enjoying a coffee and catching up with his fishing buddies who lovingly referred to him as “Rubber Duck.”

He also enjoyed woodworking and whittling one-of-a-kind replicas of birds. But most of all, he loved the ocean.

He is predeceased by his wife, Glennis Cole, and siblings Madelene “Brooks” Robinson, and three brothers, Richard, Warren and Carl Brooks.

Survivors include his daughter, Donna Hansen of South Berwick; a son, Dean of South Berwick and a stepdaughter, Rose Marie Kratovil of Kennebunkport; five grandsons, two granddaughters and nine great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

He will be missed and remembered by friends and acquaintances for always lending a helping hand.

There are no services planned. In accordance with Donnie’s wishes, his cremated remains will be scattered in the waters off Kennebunkport.

Should friends choose, memorial donations in his memory are encouraged to: Maine Lobstermen’s Association, 2 Storer St., Suite 203, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
