William Steele, Jr.

William Swinton Steele, Jr., 71, of Kennebunk, formerly of Danbury, Connecticut, died Saturday morning, Dec. 17, 2016 at Bradford Court in Kennebunk. He was born in Yakima, Washington, on April 19, 1945, the son of William Swinton Steele, Sr., and Elizabeth (Loudon) Steele. During his childhood, Bill and his family lived in Washington state, France and Washington, D.C.

After attending St. Alban’s High School, Yale University, and New York University law school, Bill grew deep roots in Connecticut. He practiced law for 41 years with Pinney, Payne, Van Lenten, et al in New Milford and Danbury, Connecticut.

A lifelong Episcopalian, Bill spent several years on the vestry at St. Paul’s Church in Brookfield. He also served on the board of the Burnham Library in Bridgewater, Connecticut.

An avid golfer, he particularly enjoyed participating in tournaments that benefited regional and local charities. Always honest, thoughtful and kind, Bill was well known by friends, colleagues, and clients as a true gentleman.

Bill was proud of his four children and their spouses and deeply endeared to his eight grandchildren. He enjoyed staying apprised of and participating as fully as possible in their evolving lives. Through words and example, Bill embodied love, stability, generosity and goodness.

Since moving to Maine in 2014, Bill has enjoyed many long walks along the beach, more frequent visits with children and grandchildren, and camaraderie, friendship and care from residents and staff at Huntington Common in Kennebunk.

Bill is survived by three sons, William “Willy” S. Steele III and wife Michelle of Northbrook, Illinois, Matthew Loudon Steele and wife Liz of Wolfboro, New Hampshire; Peter Michael Steele and wife Shoko of Walnut Creek, California; his daughter, Lisa Steele-Maley and husband Thomas of Edgecomb; two sisters, Elizabeth “Betsy” Steele of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Julie Case and husband Ross of Seattle, Washington; and eight grandchildren, Mica, Amia, Owen, Grady, Will, Madison, Thatcher and Duncan.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016 at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, 722 N. 145th St., Shoreline, Washington, where Bill will be interred. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name are encouraged to: Alzheimer’s Association-Maine Chapter, 383 U.S. Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
