District is happy with outcome of fluoride vote

To the editor:

The Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells Water District is pleased with the outcome of the fluoride referendum. In addition to thanking the Kennebunk Post for its in-depth coverage of the issue, we would like to thank the hard working volunteers of the Campaign to Reconsider Water Fluoridation.

Above all however, we want to thank our local voters for their informed, conscious decision to cease the addition of fluoride to our water.

The voters clearly spoke, with a 66 percent to 34 percent margin – the largest margin of any candidate or issue on the ballot. We want our customers to know that their collective voice has been heard. We turned off the fluoride feed pumps on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Within the next few days the drinking water to all customers will return to the natural background levels of about 0.25 parts per million, as the remaining fluoridated water is depleted from our water storage tanks. Our customers now have the choice of whether or not to utilize a topically applied fluoridated product on their teeth –without ingesting it – in conjunction with good oral hygiene to maintain healthy teeth.

We look forward to staying true to our mission of providing the highest quality of water and customer service at the lowest reasonable cost.

Again, thank you to all who have made this possible.

Norm Labbe, superintendent
Kennebunk Kennebunkport
and Wells Water District
