Joseph Sheehan

Joseph L. Sheehan, 90, a man of incredible wit and compassion for his fellow man, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016 at his residence in Wells following a lengthy illness, in the company of his loving wife Peg.

Joe, to all who knew him, was born Oct. 30 1926 in Cambridge Massachusetts, the son of Raymond M. and Helena Brennan Sheehan, and is a graduate of Cambridge High and Latin School.

Answering his nations call to arms, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the Philippines with a Military Police battalion, and returned to active duty during the Korean War. Using the GI Bill, between these periods of active duty, he enrolled in Boston University, eventually earning his degree in journalism in 1951.

Upon his graduation, he quickly joined Equifax, as an account representative, eventually being transferred to Atlanta. He later opened his own agency, Joe Sheehan and Associates, and eventually joined McDonald & Little Advertising, working on many accounts, including Coca-Cola, and taking part in several political campaigns, including the 1976 Presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter.

While residing in Atlanta, he was active with the Jaycees, eventually serving as the organizations National President.

Moving to Wells in 1993, he joined the York County Coast Star as the reporter for Wells and Ogunquit, eventually becoming a columnist for the papers widely popular Shenanigans column, where he commented upon local newsmakers, people, events and happenings, bringing a humorous viewpoint to the issue at hand, occasionally ruffling a few feathers, but mostly bringing a perspective to an issue that resonated with most readers.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Wells, William J Kelly Council, The Knights of Columbus, Wells Historical Society, and was an active member of the Wells Rotary Club.

Joe is predeceased by his siblings, Warren and Raymond Sheehan, Dorothea Behenna and Marie Dawe.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Margaret “Peg” Sheehan of Wells, two sons Mark Sheehan and his wife Pat of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Andrew Sheehan of Atlanta, his first wife and mother to his children, Barbara Sheehan of Atlanta, seven grandchildren, Aaron, Cameron, Emmett, Gabrielle, Iris, Matthew and Sarah Sheehan, one great grandchild, Oliver, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Friday, Nov. 18 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, followed by a Funeral Mass at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Mary’s Church, Eldridge Road, Wells.
