Robert Chermak

Robert Thomas “Bob” Chermak, 81, of Kennebunk, died early Wednesday morning, July 13, 2016 at his residence. He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on July 28, 1934, the son of Robert Carl and Mary (Spyak) Chermak. Bob grew up in Endicott, New York, a graduate of Union Endicott High School, class of 1952. He continued on to college, graduating from Albany College of Pharmacy in 1955.

In 1961, he met his future wife, the former Rosemary Sauerbrey when she dropped off a prescription for him to fill. Bob filled the script, then called her the next day to ask her out on a date. They went to a movie, followed by a diner for coffee. Their very memorable first date set the stage for a 55-year marriage, which began in the middle of a blinding snowstorm on Feb. 4, 1961.

Bob began his career as a pharmacist at Hamlin’s Pharmacy, serving the Binghamton, Endicott and Johnson City tri-city area. In 1973, after 18 years at Hamlin’s (which eventually was acquired by CVS), he became a hospital pharmacist at United Health Services in Johnson City. From this point until his retirement in 1999, he was basically on call 24 hours a day, sometimes driving to the hospital in snowstorms to fill vital prescriptions. He was passionate about his job, highly respected by doctors and co-workers, and served as a mentor to many junior pharmacists.

Bob was an avid aviation enthusiast, routinely taking pleasure flights with his children from the Tri-Cities Airport in Endicott.

He was a regular at air shows and could readily identify aircraft from World War II to present. An accomplished sketch artist, he enjoyed drawing planes. His children shared many fond memories of growing up in Endicott, remembering carefree childhood days.

Bob was known for his extensive collection of ball caps. In addition to a particular hat he was wearing for the day, there was always the next day’s hat set aside.

After vacationing at the Maine seacoast for many years with his family, Bob and Rosemary decided to move to Maine, relocating to Kennebunk in 2003, a move they never regretted.

Bob was a communicant at Holy Spirit Parish/St. Martha’s Church in Kennebunk. He was member of the Knights of Columbus (4th degree), and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow Knights. He also stayed in close contact with the alumni association from Albany College of Pharmacy.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 55 years, Rosemary Chermak of Kennebunk; his son, Robert Chermak and wife Nancy of Biddeford; two daughters, Sarah Chermak of Manhattan, New York, Julie Ogletree and husband David of Needham, Massachusetts, and their children Charles W. and John T. Ogletree; his sister, Jean Desany of Amherst, New Hampshire.
