RSU 21 withdrawal

To the editor:

In a few days, on June 14, the citizens of Arundel will be asked to vote on whether or not to move forward with the first step to withdraw from RSU 21.

I will be voting yes to start the process. Why? Because we need to know exactly how such a withdrawal will affect our town. The study done a few years ago will be invalid and not provide the accurate picture we need for our decisions today.

A yes vote will allow Arundel and the RSU to negotiate a fair withdrawal contract under state guidelines. Then, our independent team of withdrawal experts will analyze the financial impact to our town. Given the close vote last time and the disturbing circumstances that have brought us to this process again, why wouldn’t we want to see if there is a better, more economical way to educate our children with local control and school choice for all.

Since we joined RSU 21, our school taxes have gone higher and higher year after year with no end in sight. And it is going to get worse.

It is worth the time and energy to see if there is a better, more efficient way to run our school system. Towns like Dayton and Saco have benefitted from withdrawing from their RSU, why shouldn’t the town of Arundel?

Remember, if the final report shows that it is not a good financial decision to go ahead with withdrawal, we can simply vote not to withdraw after the process has been completed. Arundel citizens would be foolish to saddle themselves with a greater monetary burden then they have now.

By taking this first small step, we have hope. If we don’t, there is no hope. The risk of having withdrawal resurface again in two years is too great, especially with the runaway spending habits of the RSU.

We need to act now. Please vote yes on June 14 for the chance for a brighter and more prosperous future for the town of Arundel and our children.
