KENNEBUNK — With permits in hand, investors are not wasting time letting the grass grow under their feet before starting work on a new hotel in Kennebunk.

In fact, they’re barely even giving the grass a chance to get green.

According to a press release issued Monday, Kennebunk Port Hotel, LLC will hold a formal groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, April 15, for a new Hampton Inn at the corner of Independence and Heritage Drive in Kennebunk.

The new hotel will be located just off Exit 25 on the southbound side of Interstate 95.

The 73-unit hotel is expected to open for guests in the spring of 2017. The “mid-priced” Hampton Inn will also feature an indoor pool and breakfast area. It will be run by Hill Hospitality Group, which has managed the Wells/Ogunquit Hampton Inn since its opening.

DLW Architects of Dunedin, Florida, designed the hotel using Hampton Inn’s “new forever young concept.” Launched in 2014 as part of Hampton’s 30th anniversary, the “forever young” concept has spread to all 2,000 Hampton Inns worldwide. It features exteriors with custom cornices – updating the chain’s previous mansard-style roofs – along with an updated paint scheme and guest rooms that feature expanded work spaces and easier-to-access power outlets.

Nine investors are part of Kennebunk Port Hotel LLC, including Mark Patterson of Patco Construction in Sanford.

Patterson and the partners first had the idea for a hotel at the Exit 25 site several years ago, but the plans were shelved when the recession hit in 2009. The current iteration began development about two years ago, he said.

Local officials have lauded the project – one of the few franchise hotels in the Greater Kennebunks – and an economic boon, ideal for business travelers.

“It’s a great location and we’re glad to have them,” Town Manager Barry Tibbetts said.
