Hurricane Island: Offshore, Offline, Off the Grid

Hurricane Island provides extraordinary opportunities for teens to discover what it takes to make a difference in the world. This beautiful island is an ideal setting for science and leadership programs in Marine Ecology, Island Ecology and Sustainability, packed with outdoor learning and adventure that takes advantage of Hurricane Island’s breathtaking coastline, beaches, and trails. We’ll investigate the vibrant, the delicate, and the intricate; examine the slimy, the oozing, and the alien; and we’ll leave few rocks unturned in the process!

Everyone on Hurricane lives off the grid, practicing sustainable living using the unique systems and technologies that support our island community. Adventures include learning how to row in Penobscot Bay and how to rock climb and rappel in our quarry. And no day is complete without a pick-up soccer game, ocean swim, sunset hike, or late-night star gazing. Participants will unplug and hone their critical thinking skills, all while earning a unique certificate of completion to add to their school transcripts.
