George Stewart

George B. Stewart passed away on March 6, 2016, at Huntington Common in Kennebunk.

George grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as one of four brothers, and was a lifelong Pirates and Steelers fan. He attended Pittsburgh public schools, where he excelled in baseball and basketball, and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Cornell University. After college, he served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Walter Reed Army Hospital. George worked for more than 30 years in finance in New York City, including executive positions at J. & W. Seligman, Merrill Lynch, Wertheim & Co., and the Fiduciary Trust Company. He and his family resided for 25 years in North Tarrytown, New York.

George summered in Cape Porpoise as a youth and retired to Kennebunk in 1987, where he served on the board of the Kennebunk Animal Welfare Society and on the Kennebunk budget and comprehensive plan committees. George was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susan; his children, Margaret, John, and Douglas; his four grandsons, William, Nicholas, Henry, and Daniel; and his twin brother, Edwin. George loved dogs and will be greatly missed by his black Lab, Ally.

The family thanks the staff of Huntington Common for making George’s last months happy and peaceful. A private memorial is planned. In lieu of remembrances, donations may be made in George’s memory to Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.
