George Williams

George Rowland Williams, 65, Rowland to all who knew and loved him, of Kennebunk, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 9 in Kennebunk, with his family at his side.

Rowland was born April 5, 1950 in Arlington, Massachusetts. He grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, and was the son of Sidney Bathurst and Georgia Head Williams. He is a 1968 graduate of Lexington High School, and is a 1972 graduate of M.I.T.

He was employed before retiring by biomedical companies in the greater Boston area and in New Jersey for 30 years, most recently with Genzyme in Cambridge, Massachusetts, until late 2007.

Rowland was an avid and accomplished photographer. He could always be found with his camera at his side. He enjoyed landscape photography, exhibited his work in different venues and won awards for his work. He was a volunteer photographer for the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, a member of the Art Guild of the Kennebunks, and member of the Portland Camera Club.

An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed biking, and in his early-20s biked across the country with a couple of friends. Of the three, he was the only one to complete the ride. Rowland also enjoyed hiking and exploring local nature preserves.

Survivors include his wife Stephanie Shedd Williams, two daughters, Deborah Williams and Sarah Stirling, and her husband Tom Stirling, and two grandsons, Owen and Liam Stirling, all of Kennebunk.

A celebration of Rowland’s life was held Feb. 17 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Spring interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.
