Question 4 provides opportunity to preserve 111 acres forever

To the editor: On Tuesday, Nov. 3 Kennebunk voters will have a unique opportunity to preserve 111 acres of riverfront land forever.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that our town should not pass up. I urge voters to vote yes on Question 4.

The economics of this transaction seem very reasonable to me as a taxpayer.

The price of the property is $600,000. The Kennebunk Land Trust will privately raise $500,000 or 83 percent of the total price. Kennebunk voters are being asked to contribute $100,000 or only 17 percent of the total price. Using 2010 census data that equates to a one time cost of about $9 per resident.

What does $9 buy?

1) Lifetime access to beautiful woodlands and fields with one-mile of river frontage on the Mousam River.

2) Protection from dense residential development that would put further stress on town resources such as police, fire, etc.

3) Water supply protection.

4) Progress towards the town’s comprehensive open space master plan. Funds have already been set aside for this type of opportunity.

5) Enhanced property values. There is a direct positive correlation between property values and conserved open spaces.

This seems like a terrific bargain to me. I urge voters to vote yes on Question 4.
