Joyce Mahler

Joyce McLean Mahler, 92, a resident of Rosewood Circle, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Portland, following a period of failing health.

Joyce was born June 27, 1923 in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Harris and Fannie A. (Joyce) McLean, and was a graduate of Bar Harbor High School and Westbrook Junior College with an associate’s degree.

Joyce met her future husband, Lloyd Mahler, in Bar Harbor while he was stationed there during WW II as he manned a sub chaser. They were married Oct. 21, 1944.

Following the war, they moved to Massachusetts, where she raised her family. Once her children were raised and on their own, she worked behind the scene with Lloyd as he ran his several businesses. Moving to Kennebunk in 1981 to be closer to their family, she became an active member of the community, always in the background.

She was a member of the Pine Tree Twiggs, a branch of the Southern Maine Healthcare Auxiliary helping Southern Maine Healthcare in Biddeford, delivered Meals on Wheels for 16 years with Lloyd, assisted with Red Cross blood drives and is a former member of Christ Church in Kennebunk. Joyce’s forte’ was to find an inconspicuous way to be of assistance to a group or cause, and help out.

Joyce is predeceased by her husband Lloyd, who died Aug. 17, 2014.

Survivors include four sons Ken Mahler (Carol) of Gray, Steve Mahler (Cindy) of Kennebunk, Peter Mahler (Kate) of Westford, Massachusetts, and Douglas Mahler of Portland, three daughters Deborah Mahler of Kennebunk, Maribeth Williamson (Brian) of Gorham, and Jane Whetstone (Rick) of Wells, 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015 at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk, for family and friends to attend.
