Library appreciates summer support

It was a hero-filled summer here at the Kennebunk Free Library.

Our summer theme of “Every Hero Has a Story” was supported by several area heroes and businesses.

The Kennebunk Fire Department and their mascot Sparky introduced children to fire safety, demonstrated firefighter gear, and allowed children to explore one of the engines and the ambulance.

Sgt. Adam Shaw and his canine partner Proxy of the Wells Police Department discussed how dogs support police in their work.

Ken Odrzywolski, D.V.M., of Kennebunk Veterinary Hospital, judged our 23rd annual pet show, awarding prizes to lots of dogs, a couple of very brave cats, chickens, and a hermit crab.

Bob Maurais of Mainely Ticks discussed steps we can take to protect ourselves and our families from tick-borne illnesses.

Cleo Smith, Master Gardener from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, taught us how to set up a worm composting bin.

Rangers Andy, Hannah, and Jordan from Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park taught us what to notice if wildlife have been nearby.

Dr. Yuri Freeman led us through a timeline of the history of science. Lynn Milewski, a Stampin’ Up demonstrator, taught us how to create a mini album journal.

Duffy’s Tavern & Grill hosted our July Trivia Night again, supplying snacks and a festive night out for our loyal contestants.

The Maine State Library lent us their “Technology Petting Zoo” so that we could help familiarize patrons with the latest digital devices.

Arundel Ice Cream, Berry’d Treasures, Kennebunk House of Pizza, Kennebunk Toy Company and Toppings Restaurant donated gift certificates that we used as raffle prizes for our Summer Reading Program for children and teens.

York Lodge No. 22 donated two bikes which were raffled off to readers this summer. The Portland Sea Dogs gave us vouchers for a free game that were given to each child and teen who registered for the Summer Reading Program.

Thank you all for supporting the Kennebunk Free Library and our community.
