Dawn Louise Hawkins

Dawn Louise Hawkins (formerly Meiklejohn/Crooker), 63, died unexpectedly July 17, 2015 at Sebastian River Medical Center in Sebastian, Florida.

Born March 4, 1952, in Medford, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Richard Crooker and Phyllis Mooney. Richard Crooker died when Dawn was 8 years old, and Phyllis then married Charles Young, with whom Dawn had a loving father daughter relationship. She was predeceased by all three parents.

As a child, Dawn enjoyed playing the organ and spending time with fami- ly. She enjoyed music, drama, art and reading.

Dawn graduated from Wakefield Memorial High School in 1970 and lived most of her life in New England, but moved to Florida 15 years ago to be closer to Charles and Phyllis. She was the owner of Barefoot Peddler Community Post Office in Sebastian.

Prior to moving to Florida, Dawn worked as a school photographer with Lifetouch National School Studios for more than 20 years -- a career that she became involved with through her father, Charles. Throughout her career with Lifetouch photographing school children, Dawn lived in various places in New Hampshire, Vermont and in Acton, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. She became a district manager for the company and managed school photography accounts throughout southern Maine.

She is best known for her love of people and animals, her caring nature and a sense of humor. She could always be found with a huge smile on her face, which many characterized as “contagious,” and she always knew how to make children laugh. She enjoyed playing games of all kinds and making memories of fun.

Dawn was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Sebastian, and actively lived the practice of being kind, loving and compassionate to others.

Survivors include her husband David Hawkins of Micco, Florida; sons Benjamin, David and Nathaniel Meiklejohn, all of Portland; brother William Young of New Durham, New Hampshire; sister Karen Lanterman of Coventry, Rhode Island and an extended family of nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends around the world.

Throughout her life, Dawn always had pets, including birds, cats and dogs. In recent years, her little dogs, Charlie, Cubby, Dude and Mooney, provided her with much joy and laughter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to H.A.L.O. Animal Rescue, 710 Jackson St., Sebastian, FL 32958 or Humane Society of Vero Beach, P.O. Box 644, Vero Beach, FL 32961 in memory of Dawn Hawkins.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at First Baptist Church in Hanover, Massachusetts.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, in Hanover Massachusetts, where she will take her final resting place alongside Charles and Phyllis Young, immediately after the service.
