Children Learn By Doing At Broadturn Farm

The MOFGA certied organic Broadturn Farm is an authentic working farm that embodies the heritage of agriculture for children through engagement with a working landscape. Whether it be marveling at the John Deere as Farmer John rolls by or greeting the box of tiny baby chicks delivered by the mail carrier, cahildren come home with dirty knees and great stories. The enthusiasm is infectious and sometimes children leave with a dream to farm.

Children start the day with a morning meeting and a little yoga (Those slop buckets are heavy! Even our youngest farmers need to stretch before lifting). After meeting, groups separate to take care of farm chores. The animals on the farm are fed and watered, eggs are collected and fence lines are checked. Sometimes, the wood red oven needs to be lit for a baking project. After chore time, everyone moves in to a morning activity. A typical morning activity might include picking strawberries and grabbing a few eggs before heading to the kitchen to make strawberry shortcake. The middle of the day is met with lunch and a story. In the afternoon, there is choice time and often a trip to the stream is an option. The Silver Brook is a small tributary that runs in to the Stroudwater River. Its home to salamanders, frogs and the occasional brook trout. There also appears to be a growing population of fairies as evidenced by the heavy development of fairy houses in the region.

Join us for our May Day Celebration & Open House on Saturday, May 9th from 1-4pm. This event is free. For more information and to register for programs please visit www.broadturnfarm.com.

Camp Marland Keeps Youth Moving, Learning and Exploring All Summer Long

Summer is the ideal time for kids to get up, get out and explore. But, for some kids summer means no access to recreational and educational activities to help them learn, grow and thrive during out-of-school time. As a result, some kids can experience learning loss and gain weight twice as fast than during the school year. For parents and caregivers looking to keep kids’ minds and bodies active, the Sanford Springvale YMCA’s Camp Marland is offering summer camp to give youth an adventurous, active and healthy summer.

YMCA camp programs provide a fun and unique experience that gives children and teens the opportunity to explore the outdoors, meet new friends, discover new interests and create memories that last a lifetime. Located on Bunganut Lake in Lyman, Camp Marland offers: canoeing, archery, hiking, shing swimming, as well as an array of traditional summer camp activities.

“YMCA summer camp supports the socialemotional, cognitive development and physical well-being of kids,” says Matthew Ouellette, Youth and Family Services Director. In our day camp, kids are in a welcoming environment where they can belong, build relationships, develop character and achieve – discovering their potential. We really encourage parents to give their kids the gift of camp so that every child can benet from the experience.”

Registration for the upcoming camp season is ongoing through the summer. Camp Marland encourages parents to give their kids the gift of camp, and to ensure that all youth have the chance to experience camp, the Sanford Springvale YMCA offers nancial assistance to those in need.
