Students deserve better buildings

To the editor:

Given the choice between a strong educational program and beautiful facilities, I will choose a strong educational program every time. But it becomes a problem when the state of school facilities starts to detract from the educational program – and it’s clear we have reached that point. Please join me in supporting the school renovation plan for RSU 21.

The revised plan is educationally sound, structurally responsible and fiscally smart. With interest rates low, our facilities deteriorating by the day, and our district’s reputation at stake, I have yet to hear an argument for why anything good comes from further procrastination. It’s time.

Thank you to everyone in the community, especially our school board members, who worked hard to find a compromise. Like any good compromise both sides have reason to be happy and both sides have reason to be unhappy – which is to say it’s a solid, reasonable plan.

Our students deserve buildings in which they can thrive, our teachers deserve an environment that supports their work and our community deserves facilities that reflect our commitment to education.

Please vote yes on June 9.
