To the editor:

It’s time.

Voters in the towns of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel have an important decision to make on June 9 – whether to support the renovation of three school facilities within our district.

A building in each town is overdue for significant investment, to meet the needs of our students today. These needs have been well documented in numerous studies.

Kennebunk High School is on the verge of obsolescence, and Mildred L. Day and Kennebunkport Consolidated are tired facilities crying for repair and modernization. Voters spoke in January 2014 that the initial proposal was too much.

The school board responded aggressively and appropriately to that message, and has come back with a $56.5 million plan that is about 25 percent less in than the earlier version. There is no separate performing arts building, no artificial turf field and less square feet all around, yet all the fundamental needs can still be met.

I am convinced this is a sound and reasonable approach to meeting the urgent needs of these school buildings in our community. Costs will just continue to escalate if this decision is postponed any further and the needs will only get greater. It’s time.

For our kids and our community and our future. Please join me in supporting this important referendum on June 9.
