AWS in running for funds

The Animal Welfare Society of West Kennebunk is in the running for a $10,000 donation, one which area residents can help it win.

PC Construction, the Portland firm that recently rebuilt South Portland High School and is currently serving as project manager for proposed renovations to three RSU 21 school buildings, is giving away $15,000 to area nonprofits, based on the results of a public vote. The company is collecting ballots on its website www.pconstruction.com/- donations through the end of March and will give $10,000 to the nominee that gets the most clicks. The runner-up will get $3,000, while the third place finisher will collect $2,000.

The current campaign is PC’s fourth round of what it calls “crowdsourced giving.” As in the past, workers at PC, a 100 percent employee-owned organization, selected the 10 finalists for this round of awards.

In addition to the Animal Welfare Society, nominees include: The Center for Grieving Children in Portland and Sanford; Day One, a substance abuse and mental health service based in South Portland; the Friends of Casco Bay, also in South Portland; Hospice of Southern Maine, located in Scarborough; the Discovery Boat Building program at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath; Pine Tree Society for disabled children and adults, located in Bath; Portland Trails, an urban land trust based in Portland; the Preble Street Resource Center in Portland; and Tedford Housing in Brunswick, which works to combat homelessness.
