EMS rates poised for increase

Ambulance rates in Kennebunk are set to go up. At its Feb. 10 meeting, the Kennebunk Board of Selectmen approved an across-the-board 1.5 percent hike in rates.

That moves the base rate for basic life support services from $419 to $425.29, and the base rate for advanced life support from $508 to $515.62. Higher rates apply for emergency service, ranging from new fees of $684.11 for BLS to $1,158.12 for ALS with a paramedic.

“If its not necessary to send a paramedic, we should be prudent and fair with our taxpayers,” said Selectman Christopher Cluff, during debate.

Town Manager Barry Tibbetts said those decisions are made whenever any one of the town’s four ambulances is dispatched. Tibbetts said among itemized billing, he did reduce the fee for IV administration and oxygen, to $100 and $70, respectively, to keep in line with the average charged among 16 surrounding towns.
