Library to host Liberty Ship presentation

Kennebunk Free Library will host “Liberty Ships and the Arctic Convoys of the 1940s” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.

Liberty Ships crossed the Atlantic Ocean and sailed through the northern seas past Norway to Murmansk, Russia.

Their slowness made them a ready target and about 200 were lost through enemy action. Ocean cargo ships, commissioned by the British government, and U.S. Liberty cargo ships gave rise to the South Portland shipyards that thrived from 1941 to 1945.

The shipyards employed 30,000 workers, including nearly 3,700 women, who worked as welders, painters, burners, crane operators, or riveters.

The snow date is Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. The presentation is part of the library’s Russian series programs.
