Richard Hawes

Richard Gilman Hawes died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at his home in Kennebunk supported by family and Hospice of Southern Maine.

Born in 1939, the son of Antoinette Marcille Hawes and Hildreth Gilman Hawes, Dick graduated from St. Francis College and received an MA from the University of New Hampshire. He taught English at Thornton Academy and was one of the founding teachers of Saco Island School.

An animal lover, he raised and mushed Alaskan Huskies with his children, competing in sled dog races all over New England. After retiring, Dick restored a ’53 Cadillac, helped restore the Paul Revere Bell at First Parish in Kennebunk, played banjo in the Kitchen Table Band, wrote and trained his German Shepherd to be a balance dog.

He is dearly loved and missed by his wife, Norma Johnsen; son, Christopher Hawes, and daughter, Sara Jones; stepdaughters Tanya and Svea Seredin; former wife, Sandra Hawes; and grandchildren.

A memorial gathering will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunk.
