Aleatha Crosier

Aleatha Ann “Chris” Crosier passed away on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at St. Andre’s Health Care Center in Biddeford, where she had been residing for one week. Chris was born in Bennington, Vermont, on May 7, 1924 to Curtis and Ruth (Clifford) Crosier.

Chris’ education was interrupted when she was 16 when she needed to care for her terminally ill mother. After her mother died, she and her father moved to Wells where she continued her education and graduated from Wells High School in 1944. Chris then graduated from Gorham State Teachers College and began her 35- year teaching career in Kennebunk.

Chris was a strict disciplinarian in the classroom, but well loved by her students due to her policies of respect for students and her zero tolerance for bullying and students disrespecting each other.

After her retirement from teaching she belonged to York County Retired Teachers and did a great deal of work on the Christmas Fair that supported the scholarship fund. She also volunteered at the Cape Porpoise Library.

Chris had an almost lifelong friendship with retired teacher Drucilla B. Landry. They could often be seen at their favorite restaurants around town, enjoying breakfast or lunch.

Chris loved to read, especially poetry, she loved art, gardening and she especially loved caring for her 35 lilac bushes, which she pruned by herself well into her 80s. Chris also loved animals, especially her cats and her neighbors’ dogs.

Chris had no family, but is survived by her dear friends, neighbors and caretakers Nelson and Donna Ballou.

In accordance with Chris’ wishes, there will be no services. Chris’ essence will reappear in the spring, in every lilac blossom in her backyard.

If anyone desires, donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094, in Chris’ memory.

Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
