Larry Pierce

Larry Pierce, 66, of Sanford, passed away at his home Monday evening, Aug. 18, 2014 surrounded by his loving family after battling a long illness.

Larry was born in Saco on March 1, 1948, to Wayne and Margaret (Campbell) Pierce, and is a graduate of Kennebunk High School.

Larry enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a Seabee from 1967 to 1971. During that time he served a tour in Vietnam, receiving the Purple Heart.

He was a longtime truck driver for several local companies, including Dick McCabe, and most recently Hannaford, from which he retired in 2006 after 19 years of service.

Larry was a member of Arundel Lodge No. 76, AF & AM, Kennebunkport, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He loved woodworking, greatly enjoyed cooking for his large family and was a big NASCAR fan.

He was predeceased by his father in 2013.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rachel Henry Pierce of Sanford; his mother, Margaret Provencher of Kennebunk; his stepmother, Esther Pierce of Ocala, Florida; son, Michael Pierce and wife Stacey of Sanford, step son Bryan Chevalier of Sanford; two daughters, Wendy Shaw and husband Peter of Kennebunk, Brandy Pelaez and husband Rick of San Diego, California, stepdaughter Christine Ramsey and husband John of North Berwick; brother, Peter Provencher of Lyman, step brother Fred Adam of Ocala Florida; three sisters, Iris Cauthen of Ocala, Florida, Monique Provencher of Kennebunkport, Julie Leeson of Ocala, Florida; seven grandchildren, Jamie Shaw and wife Jennifer of Kennebunk, Jena Frost and husband Aaron of Kennebunk; Matthew Shaw of Kennebunk, Madison, Cole, Peyton and Carter Pierce, all of Sanford; two step-granddaughters Amy and Michaela Ramsey of Winthrop Massachusetts; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Autumn Shaw of Kennebunk, and Wyatt Frost of Kennebunk; and his loyal dog (and best friend) Abbie.

Larry’s family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Can Ilyas and all of the amazing staff members at Cancer Care Center of York County for all of the love and care they provided for Larry. Special thanks to Larry’s nurse Carrie Jacobsen from the V.A. and the staff from the VNA Home Health Hospice.

There are no calling hours. A Masonic service, followed by a memorial service, was held Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 at at Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk. Burial with military honors followed at Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.
