(Alex Acquisto photo) ARUNDEL — The parks and recreation department will host the town’s first 5K Trail Run/Walk Saturday, Sept. 6.

Participants will compete on the Eastern Trail, beginning at the intersection with Limerick Road.

The off-road race is tailored to children and families, said Arundel Recreation Department Director and race coordinator Jenn Dumas.

Efforts to organize the race came after many members of the public approached the department and suggested the town hold a race, Dumas said.

Preceding the trail run will be a fun run/ walk for children, which will begin at 9 a.m.

The 5K for adults and children older than 13 will begin at 10 a.m.

An awards ceremony for each age division and a pig roast will be held at Bentley’s Saloon on Route 1 after the race at noon.

Preregistration is available until Friday, Sept. 5. The first 75 people to register will receive free race T-shirt.

Preregistration is $20. The cost is $25 on race day. Children can preregister for $10, or for $15 on race day.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the parks and recreation department and a scholarship given annually by the town.

Because there is no parking at the trailhead, participants will park at Mildred L. Day School and use a free shuttle to the starting line. Check-in will begin two hours prior to starting time.

The recreation department is still seeking corporate business sponsors. Those interested should contact Dumas at 286-9241.
