Soccer games to benefit Special Olympics Maine

The 24th annual All-Star Invitational Senior Men’s/Women’s Soccer tournament will be held on Tuesday Aug. 5 at Westbrook High School. The men’s game will begin at 6 p.m. and the women’s game will be at 8 p.m. A rain date has been set for Aug. 7.

Proceeds from the games will benefit Special Olympics Maine.

The All-Star tournament is one of the most exciting soccer events of the year. The teams are made up of some of Maine’s finest varsity players from 2013. They will represent the Western Maine conference and the Southern Maine Activities Association.

The All-Star Games Committee has selected Craig Fannan of Cape Elizabeth and Josh Thorton of North Yarmouth Academy as the coaches of the WMC women’s team. Mike Andreasen of Greely and Andy Higgins of Gray/New Gloucester will coach the WMC men’s team.

For the SMAA teams Darren Boynton of Biddeford and Ed Taylor of Bonney Eagle will be coaching the women’s team and Rocco Frenzilli of Portland and Mark Diaz of Scarborough will be the coaches for the men’s team.

Natasha Staples has been chosen to represent Kennebunk in the women’s game and Griffin Drigotas has been chosen to represent Kennebunk in the men’s game.

Special Olympics Maine is a year-round athletic training and competition program for adults and children with intellectual disabilities.

In Maine there are over 3,800 athletes who compete in the program, which offers more than 60 events a year at the local, state, regional and national levels.
