National Library Week programs offered

What better way to spend National Library Week than by enjoying a local library and all of the books, magazines, DVDs and programs that it has to offer? Kennebunk Free Library offers a trio of programs to celebrate April 14 through April 19.

As always, the library will feature its famous Book Bundle drawing. Enter chances to win books in the youth, adult and children’s departments each visit to the library. Winners will be announced at the end of the day on Saturday, April 19.

Additionally, the library has organized a Food for Fines drive. Bring in one or more items for the local food bank, and fines will be cut in half. This is a great way to help the community and reduce fines.

Finally, the library will celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day for the entire week. Stop by to pick up a poem, put it in a pocket to read and share all week. Throughout history, poems have been stowed in pockets in a variety of ways, from the commonplace books of the Renaissance to the pocket-sized publications for Army soldiers in World War II.

Poem in Your Pocket day began in 1996 and has continued to be celebrated in schools, libraries and book sellers. Should your appetite need more poems, you’ll find plenty at the library and at poetry.org.

For more information, call the library at 985-2173 or visit kennebunklibrary.org.
