Hospital to hold second annual walk

Southern Maine Health Care announced that the second annual “Gary’s Walk” is scheduled for Saturday, June 7 at 9 a.m. in honor of longtime hospital and community supporter Gary Sullivan.

The three-mile course begins and ends at the Goodall Medical Office Building located at 25A June Street next to SMHC’s Sanford Medical Center. All proceeds from the event will help SMHC’s Sanford campus meet the healthcare needs of the community.

“‘Gary’s Walk’ is our way of paying tribute to Gary Sullivan and celebrating his commitment to the health and wellness of our communities,” said SMHC’s Chief Operating Officer Patsy Aprile. “Gary spent 40 years tirelessly volunteering to help improve his – and our – communities. He served nine years on the hospital’s board of trustees; stepping down shortly after being diagnosed with ALS.

“One of SMHC’s goals for ‘Gary’s Walk’ is to encourage people to take steps to be healthy,” added Aprile. “So mark your calendars for June 7. There will be food, music and more. It’s a great opportunity for families of all ages to have fun and support their community hospital.”

Last year “Gary’s Walk” raised more than $24,000 that was used to purchase new anesthesia monitoring equipment for operating rooms and patient care equipment for the medical/surgical unit. Sanford Institution for Savings (SIS) will once again be the platinum sponsor for the event.

Children younger than 12 may walk for free.

Participants are asked to collect pledges and the first 100 adults to register will receive a free Gary’s Walk T-shirt. Registration on the day of the event opens at 8 a.m. To register in advance, visit www.active.com and type in Gary’s Walk in the What’s Your Activity tab, download a registration form at www.smhc.org or call 490-7027.
