Helen Farrier

Helen (Sanford) Farrier, 89, formerly of Westford, Mass., and Biddeford Pool, passed away peacefully at Atria Assisted Living, Kennebunk, on Feb. 6, 2014. She was the wife of the late Herbert E. (Ned) Farrier.

Born Jan. 5, 1925 in Newton, Mass., Helen attended Newton Schools, graduating in 1943. During World War II, she worked as a secretary for Raytheon and later for Bachrach Photographers, Boston. Helen and Ned were married May 1, 1948 and in 1951 moved to Westford, where they raised their family.

She joined the Westford School Department as a secretary in 1960, retiring after 33 years of service, in 1993. She then joined Ned at their family home in Biddeford Pool where she happily remained until 2012.

Helen was much loved by her immediate family, her extended Atria family, and her many friends. Known for her sense of humor, wit, authenticity and honesty, she was loyal, supportive mother and a trusted confidant to many people in her life. She was a tough Yankee who lived independently and alone for many years after her husband passed. She loved a good joke and could ad lib with the best. In her athletic prime, she had a respectable tennis game and refereed high school field hockey. She was a fan of Tom Brady and Tiger Woods and rarely missed a TV appearance by either. At age 80, she learned to play and love bridge and always appreciated a well-made gin and tonic on her deck overlooking the marsh at Biddeford Pool. She adored her friends from Westford Academy, Bodywise at UNE, Kennebunk Senior Center, and Atria.

She was the best, and we are enormously richer for having had her in our lives.

Family members include: son Sanford Farrier and Karen Chandler of Newburyport, Mass.; daughter Anne (Farrier) and Robert Checchi of Tyngsborough, Mass.; grandchildren Molly (Farrier) and David Kremer of Sammamish, Wash.; Lauren (Checchi) and Tony Alessi of Holliston, Mass.; John and Kaitlyn Checchi of Nashua, N.H.; great-grandchildren Andrew and Alison Kremer, Lillian Alessi, Zachary Checchi.

Friends are invited to a celebration of Helen’s life, Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Atria Kennebunk, One Penny Lane, Kennebunk.

Arrangements are under the care of Advantage Funeral Services, Portland.
