Teenagers need assistance from Secret Santa, too

To the editor:

The Secret Santa organization serves local children up to age 18 whose families cannot afford Christmas presents. Our trees are out in the community right now bearing tags describing the gifts requested for these children by their families. If you take a tag, buy a gift, and return it to the tree, we will deliver it in time for Christmas.

Our trees can be found at the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel town halls, Graves Library and Kennebunk Free Library, local branches of Kennebunk Savings Bank, Quest Fitness and Cocoons Day School. So that our volunteers will have time to shop for unfilled requests, we ask that you return your donation to any tree location by Dec. 9.

We are writing to remind your readers that teenagers need Secret Santa, too.

Each year many of them ask for gift certificates for clothing and music they can pick out themselves. Typically, those tags tend to stay right on our trees.

We understand that buying a gift card may not be as much fun as picking out a toy or a cute outfit for a little one, and we certainly need those donations as well. But Secret Santa hopes that when you survey the tags on our trees this year some of you will consider taking a teen’s tag. It is just as important to them to find a gift under the tree as it is to their little brother or sister. Nobody wants to be left out on Christmas morning.

For 26 years this community has generously helped us meet the needs of our littlest recipients, but we often struggle to serve the older ones. If you agree that Christmas isn’t just for little kids, why not make a big kid’s Christmas wish come true? This year, please consider taking their tag and being a teenager’s Secret Santa.

Thank you and Happy Holidays,
Secret Santa
