Frederick Wiegleb Sr.

Frederick Lewis Wiegleb, Sr., 79, of Arundel, beloved husband of Janice Wiegleb, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, following a brief struggle with leukemia.

Fred was born in Paterson, N.J., on June 12, 1934, a son of Ernst Heinrich Ludwig and Christine M. (Beesley) Wiegleb. He grew up in Hawthorne, N.J. and was a graduate of the Newark College of Engineering.

In 1955, he married Marie Claudette Simon and entered the U.S. Air Force, remaining on active duty for eight years. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, retiring after a combined 22 years of active and reserve service. Fred and Claudette were married for 37 years and had eight children together.

In 1994, Fred married Janice Weston. Together they worked as business partners and enjoyed many adventures, near and far.

Fred was a civil engineer, working in plant management before opening his own business, Downeast Duplicating, from which he retired in 2007.

Fred was president of the Scarborough Fish and Game Club for the past 10 years where he redesigned and expanded the facility for the betterment of the community. He was an active member of Ducks Unlimited and donated his time and talents to the society. He served previously as president of the Board of the Kennebunk Land Trust. Fred was a long time trap shooter, winning numerous awards in competition. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, duck carving, gardening, bee keeping, and woodworking. He was a staunch conservative and a keen follower of American politics.

Along with his wife Jan, he was a communicant of St. Martha’s Church.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Ernst Wiegleb; and two grandchildren, Kenny Szwec and Jack Groce.

He is also remembered fondly by his first wife, Marie Claudette Wiegleb, of Milford, N.J.

He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Janice Wiegleb; eight children, Suzanne Baker and husband Vince of Basking Ridge, N.J., Jeanne Szwec and husband Bernie of Milford, N.J., Christine Prosser and husband Tom of Arundel, Karen Wiegleb of Bethlehem, Pa., Frederick Lewis Wiegleb, Jr., and wife Lisa of Stillwater, Okla., Joan Wiegleb and husband Jeff Adkins of North Lewisburg, Ohio, Gisela Groce and husband Jake of Westerville, Ohio, Dorothy Maxim and husband Ben of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Walter Wiegleb and wife Eileen of Manchester, Paul Wiegleb and wife Julie of Parkman; his step-daughter, Rebecca Read and husband James of Kennebunkport; 13 grandchildren, Shane and Nathaniel Prosser, Russell Szwec, Colin and Kyle Baker, Charlotte, Henry, and Parker Groce, Gavriel Wiegleb, Claudia Maxim, Isabel and Harry Read, and Aaron Adkins.

Visiting hours were Nov. 4 at Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk. A Catholic funeral mass was celebrated in his honor Nov. 5 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wells. Burial with military honors followed at Southern Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.
