Community turnout was fun to see

To the editor:

Thank you to the Kennebunk community for making the Harvest Festival such a successful event.

Your enthusiastic turnout brightened a cloudy day and the chill in the air was warmed by the sight of your children having such a great time showing off their special costumes in the parade and entertaining the crowds by acting out their costumed alter ego.

It was such fun to see them sorting through the pumpkin patch to pick out “just the right one” to decorate and later on hopping aboard the horse-drawn wagon to show off those wonderful costumes for an encore ride through town.

Community events like this take the effort of so many volunteers, town employees and local businesses. We especially thank Sgt. Andy Belisle and the Kennebunk Police Department, Matt Duplisea from the rec department, Scott Wentworth from public works, and Charles Godfrey of Wallingford Farm for his gracious loan of hay bales. Thanks also to selectman Chairman Al Searles for procuring two tons of pumpkins and to the Kennebunk High School football players who laboriously washed and cleaned them all in the early morning hours; the KHS Interact Club who came to help supervise the children’s activities, and then stayed around to clean up afterwards. What amazing teens you are. Our thanks to Ahmed Ciangiulli for providing “Monster Mash” music and tending to the sound system.

The scarecrow scavenger hunt wouldn’t be possible without the enthusiasm of our Main Street merchants and businesses who create such diverse and entertaining examples of storefront scarecrows, or without Linda Johnson of the Downtown Committee who organizes this hunt every year.

All of you helped make the 4th Annual Harvest Fest the biggest and best yet. And to the community at large: thank you for coming to our party.

With deep appreciation,
Kennebunk Festival Committee
