Community support is appreciated

To the editor:

To the Cape Porpoise, Arundel, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport Communities:

The warm spring weather seems to have finally arrived and with the turning season, we’ll soon be sending The Landing School’s Class of 2013 to start their careers in the marine trades. Two of our students, Prescott Wright and Zachary Wells, will be awarded their diplomas posthumously for as many of you know, these young men died this past December in a tragic accident in the waters off Cape Porpoise.

It was a difficult winter for all of us in this small school and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Zach’s and Prescott’s families. In tragedy we often find fellowship and in this case, it extended to the entire community of Cape Porpoise, Arundel, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport.

I write on behalf of all the members of our board of directors, our faculty and staff, and our student body. Please know we deeply appreciate all the support we received from this wonderful community during those very difficult days and thank all of you for your generosity.

There are so many to thank that it’s impossible to list them all in this letter. Perhaps one example demonstrates the extraordinary kindness of this community.

On Sunday, Dec. 24 as the intense search for Zach and Prescott was underway, I was approached by a stranger in the parking lot of the Cape Porpoise Kitchen. He had recognized me from a news report, approached me and handed me a piece of paper with his phone number.

He said, “I know how difficult this must be on everyone. This is my phone number. If there is anything I can do to help, please call me.”

His offer was among the many, many phone calls, emails and text messages we received offering support in so many ways.

Events like this remind us not only to appreciate and value each day we’re alive, but to appreciate all those around us who help us through our more difficult days. To all in the community, thanks so much for your support.

Robert J. DeColfmacker, president
The Landing School
