Library to celebrate launch of new book

Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library in Kennebunkport will mark its centennial with the public launch of a new Joyce Butler book, “Kennebunkport: the Evolution of an American Town” on June 23. It will be the first day the public will get to hear and hold the result of the research and narrative penned by historian Joyce Butler.

Advanced tickets for the June 23 reception may be purchased at the Graves Library at 18 Maine St., starting Thursday, May 23. Admission to the reception will include remarks by the author and a champagne toast provided by The Colony, previously known as the Breakwater Court in the early 1900s.

The afternoon reception will also include the presentation of the first annual Joyce Butler Student Historian award to a fourth-grade student from Consolidated School. Students who elected to compete for the award were required to do an essay on a famous historical figure or place in Kennebunkport. The award was established to honor the rich tradition of historical research that is so closely tied to Butler. It is also meant to encourage library usage and research among students in their formative elementary school years.

After the launch on June 23, the book will be available for sale at the library and through the website at www.graveslibrary.org, KenneBooks and a few retail stores in the area.

Volume II (covering 1930-2003) will be available for sale in early December. A discount will be given if both volumes are purchased together. All proceeds benefit the Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library.
