(John Fisher courtesy photo) KENNEBUNK – Like most seniors at Kennebunk High School, 17-year-old Hannah Sirois is preparing to apply to colleges.

Her first choice is University of Maine – Farmington, where she intends to apply for early action.

However, unlike most 17-year-olds, Sirois is also a model.

In August, Sirois entered a photo of herself wearing a T-shirt and shorts in an online modeling competition powered by Model Launcher.com, 10 minutes before the submission portion of the contest closed.

Sirois said she had thought about modeling, but never tried to pursue it prior to Model Launcher’s contest.

“I googled modeling opportunities because I was curious and (Model Launcher’s website) was one of the first things that came up,” she said.

The competition, which is powered by online voting via Facebook, Google + and Twitter, included several rounds in which the public voted to advance contestants to the next round. Though Sirois said she didn’t tell many people about the contest, her mother, Sharon Sirois, did.

“I had everybody on Facebook, all of my friends, vote for her,” Sharon Sirois said.

Sharon Sirois admitted at first, she and her husband Brent Sirois had some concerns about the competition. “So my husband and I researched and made sure it was legitimate before she continued.“

The process lasted 21 days, during which the public voted “up or down” on photos entered by the contestants. After the public selected the top 10 contestants, a panel of Model Launcher judges chose the winner.

The judges unanimously voted Sirois the winner.

“Hannah was an excellent choice and I am happy to welcome her to as one of our new models,” Model Launcher.com CEO Bill Staniford said in a press release.

Sirois won a trip for two to Miami, a two-night stay at the W Hotel and a professional photo shoot with photographer John Fisher. She chose to bring her mother on the trip.

“It was pretty exciting. The first night I got there I just explored Miami with my mom and went to the beach and enjoyed the hotel, and then the next day it was the photo shoot all day long with John Fisher,” said Sirois.

Sirois’ mother said that the trip was a positive experience, particularly since her daughter will be away at college next year. “It was nice for her and I to go and have the time together by ourselves. We had such a great time and they treated her like family.”

Model Launcher’s PR firm, Beautiful Planning Marketing & PR, will be representing Sirois moving forward.

“We basically work to get her name out in the media and out to our (esteemed) fashion industry connections, as we have specialized in fashion PR for years,” said Beautiful Planning CEO Monique Tatum in an email.

Tatum added that the PR firm is “working to put modeling agency partnerships in place and have two locked in.”

Sirois’ predecessor, Model Launcher’s June winner, Brandi Nicole, recently walked for Mercedes Benz Fashion week and was cast as a runway model for Season 10 of Project Runway.

Sirois said her goal is to get her bachelor’s degree in elementary education, minor in prelaw and then become a second-grade teacher.

“I’m also focused on child advocacy,” she said.

Currently, Sirois is apprenticing with second-grade teacher Beth MacLeod at Kennebunk Elementary, while she attends Kennebunk High School.

We are very proud of her,” said Sharon Sirois, “We are very pleased and happy that she has this opportunity, because I do think it’s an opportunity that will open a lot of doors for her.”
