Marlowe John LeBarge

Marlowe John LeBarge, 84, of Cat Mousam Road, died peacefully early Monday morning, Sept. 3, 2012 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Kennebunk on Sept. 7, 1927, the son of John B. and Frances R. (Bragg) LeBarge. He grew up and was educated locally, graduating from Kennebunk High School, class of 1945.

Following high school, Marlowe proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was married to the former Judith MacIntyre. They would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this October.

Following the war, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a fireman on different shifts for several years. On his days off, he worked with his father in the family plumbing business.

His dad, John LeBarge, was the first generation plumber, then Marlowe started his own plumbing and heating business, Marlowe J. LeBarge Plumbing and Heating. His son, Jonathan, joined him in 1982 and took over the business upon Marlowe’s retirement a few years ago as the third generation plumber.

Marlowe was active in community affairs, serving on the school board and zoning board for several years. He was a former member and past president of the Kennebunk Rotary Club, where he had perfect attendance for 50 years and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.

He served as director, Region 1, United States Golfing Fellowship of Rotary and his team won the first U.S. National Championship Golf Tournament in 1990.

He was an honorary member and driver for the Kennebunk Fire Department for over 50 years.

He was a member of York Lodge 22, AF & AM, West Kennebunk, Scottish Rite of Portland, Kora Temple of Lewiston, Murray Royal Arch Chapter 33, West Kennebunk and St. Amand Commandery, West Kennebunk.

He attended Wells Branch Baptist Church for many years and most recently was a member of Kennebunk Baptist Church.

He was an avid golfer and was a life member of Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport. He earned his private pilot’s license in the 1970s. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed deer hunting, ice fishing, hunting black bear and striper and smelt fishing. Marlowe enjoyed spending time with his family and his special dog “Matlock.”

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Judith LeBarge of Kennebunk; his son Jonathan “John” LeBarge and his wife, Sandra,ofWestKennebunk;fourdaughters, Elizabeth “Betsy” Ames-Fitzgerald and her husband, Jim, of Kennebunkport, Laurie Adelmann and her husband, Arpad, of Rollinsford, N.H., Deborah “Debbie” Morrissey and her husband, Patrick, of Quincy, Mass.; Kristen Parker and her husband, James, of Kennebunk; eight grandchildren: Adam Ames, Meaghan, Patrick, Jr., Brenna Morrissey, Emily, David Parker, Cheyenne Fitzgerald, Jenna LeBarge; four great grandchildren: Jacob, Andrew, Pyper and Leland Ames. He is also survived by his close cousin, George LeBarge, of Wells Branch.

Calling hours were held Sept. 7 with a Masonic service at Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk. Burial will be private.
